What is going on in suburbia? Miles and his wife Beth buy their dream home in a prestigious neighborhood, The puke yellow walls have barely dried and their neighbors are starting to move out. Is it something Miles did or the result of the latest financial crisis? Even Beth runs off with a neighbor's born-again wife, leaving Miles to raise their two kids by himself. But help is at hand. Across the street, the local hillbilly offers beer and good fishing. Squatters - escapees from an "Occupy Wall Street" encampment - move in next door. An uneasy calm descends on the neighborhood - until two Afghan boy belly dancers seek refuge from their warlord oppressor.
Trash Days David E Tillman Books
There are many forms of snarky/funny - wry, affectionate, ironic, and sometimes sour and just a little too condescending. Which one you prefer is purely a mood and sense of humor thing, as best as I can tell. So, what do we have here?Well, to me this book can press right up to the edge of a bit too sour, but then it will ease off with a rueful shrug and an unexpectedly cheerful and upbeat observation. Or, at least that's where it is for the first half, when it is basically a comedy of manners set in the suburbia of bank failures and market collapse. (MILD SPOILER ALERT) But then, for the second half, it goes off the narrative rails, moving from wacky to surreal. We get a sex scandal, squatters, economic collapse, the Taliban, and ninja moms.
Wherever you end up in terms of "liking" this book, it is written in an accomplished and confident manner. It is what it is and the author knows what he is doing. The author goes after some easy targets, but he also explores new territory and can catch the reader by surprise. There are some set pieces that are pricelessly brutal, (the narrator's interview for a new job), but there are also some touching and insightful throwaway lines that are truly admirable.
Lots of times books like these are just Mary Sue exercises. The author/narrator is a jerk, but in the book he gets to be funny, he gets the promotion, he has sex with lots of women, he wins a fist fight and he ends up justifying himself and his world view, even though he is and always will be a jerk. It can get pretty tedious reading one of those, even if there are some witty lines. That's not what's going on here. Our narrator actually has some self-awareness and he actually develops into someone wiser and better by the end. Maybe the surreal events of the second half of the book are intended to shake the author's smugness and superiority. It works.
And, indeed, the whole book works, even when it threatens to skid out of control. It's a wild ride, but an entertaining one.
